I had a hen go broody but some eggs were duds, she kicked a few of of the nest. Didn’t seem to be working. I was baking Christmas cookies after work and needed some eggs so I went out to grab some and checked on the broody on the way out.
There was a dead, cold wet chick on the floor and another almost dead under the hen. The flooding had reached her nest and the straw was damp. Time to act.
I grabbed chickie and brought it in and placed it by the fire
Soon it began to dry out, fluff up and start talking.
Within an hour it was up. I grabbed a brooder box and set it up with a light. I attempted to save the other chick but I was too late.
A week later Nugget is doing great. A little lonely, but I give it some time every day. Hopefully it will bond with me.
And the broody? She gave up on having kids and has gone back to laying.
I went to the farm store this evening to pick up supplies for castrating and docking I’m doing tommorrow (I toyed with the idea of ear tags be decided against it since they always get torn out anyway) and heard peeping.
chicks were in. How could I resist taking a “peep” (heeh…didn’t mean to do that!)
first bin had ducklings. Cute buggers with black webby feets widdle bwown noses and teenytiiiiny widdiw baybee wings…..i took a picture and sent it to my mother. “temptation.” I captioned it.
I bought my stuff, scored on some clearance items. Got in the car and my mother sent me back a text, “why didn’t you buy them?” With my sense of reason telling me i have room to hoard more animals I ran back in the store 5 minutes before closing and picked up two little Cayuga ducklings.
There is literally a duck in my hair. LOOK AT THAT DUCKBUTT HANGING OUT OF MY HAIR!
Peep peep peep all they way home. Back home I pulled them out of the box and set them down on my lap. They quickly climbed up my body and nestled in my hair and quieted down very happy. We took a nap and i listened to their little hearts beat blood through their soft bodies. I got up and one climed further into my hair. I caught myself exclaiming “I’ve got a duck caught in my hair!” One of those things you’d never expect to hear yourself say you know.
Dolly and Porter are spending the night in the bathtub with the brooded placed sort of in it with water and food. I need to repair the tractors since some animal ripped a hole in one and the other has a broken door. I’m super looking forward to having ducks! These two will be very tame I’m guessing by their antics crawling all over me. A new beast to add to the rosters….
I’ve been waiting on lambs all month. I put the ram in for early Feburary lambs…I’ve been waiting. And waiting…Finally came the lambs! Polly went first. I went to bed know she was in her last 24 hours. I was late to the barn in the morning and found her finishing up. She looked at me a little incredulously that I was late, but she knew she didn’t need me anyway. Still its the thought that counts and clearly i don’t think because i was late, harumph! I had a first! An all white ram! And a ewe lamb. Lovely!
Off I went to work, but not before Peppercorn began to nest. I saved wool from skirting fleeces for her in a bag (as she was so fond of Blazes virgin fleece that she used it in her first nest) and as i was pulling it out of the bag she motioned “gimme gimme gimme!” so i gave her another bit of fleece and she looked at me “gimme gimme gimme!” *Shrug* I gave her the feed bag full of fleece and she happily dragged the bag to her nest and proceeded to happily fumble with the bag until I left for work. Weird pig.
I came home and she’d done her job nicely. I’ve even got an Elvis impersonator piglet!
Two days later Ash lambed. Again, boy and girl.
Glam, a ewe lamb, might be as cute as they come.
The next day Monk went. She did quite fine…
3/3 ewes and rams.
Today Leche pigged. 7 piglets and all pink.
Lastly we have Blaze and Princess. Blaze is getting so big I thought she was going to lamb first but shes just growing and growing. Hopefully it all goes well for my big girl!
And soon! she looks miserable! Though shes walking around with sass so i guess shes not too bad.
